756
I was watching the Dr. Phil show when KRON-TV Channel 4 interrupted the show with a special announcement.
"We have late breaking news," said the commentator. "Barry Bonds has just broken the all time Major League home run record by hitting his 756th home run tonight at AT&T Park in San Francisco."
With that, I flipped back to the game which I had abandoned only a few minutes earlier after the other Barry, Barry Zito, coughed up the third Washington Nationals home run of the game.
The scene at the ballpark was nutty. The game was put on hold for at least ten minutes while Barry Bonds addressed the crowd, as did Hank Aaron, all the while the whole Washington Nationals team waited to resume the game. The only other time I'd seen a spectacle like this was when I personally witnessed Bonds hit home run #71 in 2001.
To the Giants credit, they toned down the mid-game on field celebration quickly, and resumed the game. The next inning, Bonds trotted back out to left field to take his defensive position, only to be taken out shortly thereafter to the cheers of the crowd. It was only the 6th inning, but as we've known for a while, this season isn't about the Giants winning games, it's all about Barry and the HR record.
About 5 minutes after Barry left the game the Giants TV announcers started pimping Bonds' 756 merchandise for sale.
"Don't wait, get that 756 t-shirt and cap for only $45. That's a $53 retail value!"
What a sickening display. But after all, HRs = big money. And chicks.
Bonds is a smart man and realized all of this a long time ago.

You keep that stuff up about the season and you'll be drinking Iron City and eating at the Primanti Bros, too.

Yeah, I heard chicks dig the long ball, too. It doesn't seem to be working for me though.
